The debut release from Hypercolour comes from acclaimed London due, Glimpse, who’ve caused a major stir in the last 18 months with their coveted ‘% Black’ series (notably featured on Magda’s recent ‘She’s a Dancing Machine mixCD). Refusing to buy into the idea of an artist creating a self-restricting ‘sound’, they approach music as a blank canvas, producing (in their words) ‘something enexpected with more musical identity’. Their first production for Hypercolour is no exception – while all three tracks here have their sights firmly on the dancefloor, there’s more than enough advanced sonic manipulation and musical diversity on display to propel ‘Talking to Girls’ way beyond the functional whims of the dancefloor. In a scene populated by lowest common demoniator minimal rip-offs and ubiquitous plug-in FX, Glimpse’s sophisticated production techniques and instinctive sense for a killer groove set them well apart from the vast bulk of their instantly forgettanle peers.
‘Sculpture’ is specifically engineered for proper sound systems, with a relentless bass rumble underpinning a vaguely ominous riff and sharp, insidious drums – definitely one for the big room techno jocks. ‘Sort U Out’, meanwhile, injects a straight up percussive groove with a bouncing acid lick hat veers between sweat-soaked euphoria and funereal despair. Deftly bridging the gap between narcotic mono-techno and fott-shuffling Chicago house. Finally, ‘Julia’ layers some deeper chords and breathy female vox over a taut, swinging drum pattern that harks back to the golden age or melodic microhouse, in the mould of esteemed artists such as Stewart Walker, Geoff White, or even early Force Tracks. It’s the sort of tune that will sit easily in the boxes of moder deep house DJs as it will fans of techy, melodic minimalism.
Combining cutting edge studio prowess with heartfelt music sensibilities, ‘Talking to Girls’ is an instant chapter in the development of one of the UK’s most exciting new labels.
