Sweet Dreams EP (w/ Alexander Maier remix)

Hype005 / 2007 / 12” & Digital

Welcome to Hypercolour005, where we’re proud to present Malaysia’s foremost purveyor of deep electronic house, Frankie Flowerz. A resident in Berlin since 1998, his smart, slick grooves have already created a stir on labels like Crosstown Rebels, Funkhaus, and Mood, and with forthcoming releases on Tiga’s mighty Turbo planned, his sound looks set to be spread further afield than ever over the coming months.

Opener ‘Nosebleedz’ shows Frankie at his most warped, with an extended intro squeezing out the tension before a chunky, old skool-ish drum groove drops about a third of the way in. Straddling the mood of classic acid house and the digital urgency of contemporary techno, it’s tough yet deep, simple yet smart, and perfect for DJs looking to crank up their dancfloor’s.

‘Sweet Dreams’ is more of a melodic affair, with echoes of classic Detroit mingling with perfectly cooked minimal beats. Trippy enough for afterhours but still boasting oodles of dancefloor dynamics, it’s contrast of smooth tones and analogue roughness shows Frankie’s wide influences and versatile skills to maximum effect.

Remix action is provided by Stuttgart’s Alexander Maier (who’s created a bit of a stir on labels like Buzzin’Fly, Exun and Criminal), who twists ‘Sweet Dreams’ into a neo-trance anthem, with clipped percusson and a hypnotic electroid basslines counterbalanced by a buzzing, aminous vibe and drifting, laser-reaching synths. Emotively melodic and immaculately crafted, it offers emotive alternative to the original’s track-based feel.
