London’s gloriously schizophrenic Hypercolour follow releases by Kris Wadsworth and Frankie Flowerz with “The Right Time EP” by Berlin-based Brit, Mark Henning.
Henning has developed a reputation for providing heavily detailed house and techno grooves for the likes of Soma, Frankie and Freud Am Tamzen but “The Right Time” is undoubtedly the highlight of his career so far.
Built around a decidedly wonky vocal sample, “The Right Time” is a skewed, electronic take on deep house in the post minimal era. Delayed chords, key flourishes and groove with a David Byrne twitch add to the vocals superbly and create a seriously original sounding cut. There’s a dub, too….
A true house music legend in the form of Chris Simmonds stepped to the plate with the first remix of the EP. Simmonds has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Richie Hawtin, Mike Huckaby and Carl Craig with his releases over the years and prior to those early 1990’s dalliances with Detroit was an early rave engineer for the likes of Colin Dale and Carl Cox. His credentials are impeccable, and the remix follows suit with skipping drums, oscillating pads and use of the original vox all combining into something quite special.
Hypercolour, Fresh Meat and Sonido artist Shenoda handles the last of the remixes with aplomb, turning “The Right Time” into a jazz-licked percussive houser of the highest order.
Henning delivers his parting shots with “Breakfast Club”, a driving techy work out which has an early ‘90’s feel. Coming in the form of a “Original” and “Trippy” edit, Henning has made sure it’s easy to reach for these cuts at any time of the evening. This is another class act from one of the most diverse sounding house/techno labels around…
