Hypercolour are proud to welcome him into their ever-growing stable of talent – stable being the operative word here with the Caballo EP – two tracks of the freshest, rolling, percussive tech-house this side of summer.
Opening the EP, title track Caballo is a steady groover, sliding in with a deep-ass bass full of attitude, and sax samples and vocal snippets aplenty. Breaking Rocks works a similar formula, providing a solid example of Violi’s driving, upfront sound.
Backing up Violi are Chris Carrier and Ben Micklewright, aka BLM, on remix duties - having produced for pretty much all of France’s great house labels - Robsoul, Freak n’Chic, Dialect Recordings, Brique Rouge and later, own labels Catwash and Adult Only, Chris’s sound is often considered ‘future tech-house’, whilst BLM’s Fear of Flying imprint is notching up an impressive collection of deep, grooving house from London town.
Spoiling us with two cuts, Chris’s Uno and Deux remixes present takes on a Chicago House vibe as well as some stripped back, heads down tackle. Both have that trademark Carrier rolling bassline style and cut up samples.
BLM’s remix takes the original version of Breaking Rocks and turns it into a blissed out deep house re-edit. A warm, incessant bassline underpins the coolness of the track and smooth synths wash in and out of the mix. With an accomplished ear for a deeper mood, this is laid back, casual house at it’s best.
